We breed show and pet quality:
Seal, Russian and Blue Point Siamese
Marked Russian Cinnamons
Black Satin rats.
The Bao Varakhii Rattery is a small
rattery located in the northeast section of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Formerly
known as the Blue Velvet Rattery, we have been breeding fancy pet rats since
1995. Originally, we bred American Blue Teddy-Rex Dumbos, making the name "Blue
Velvet" appropriate. However, we have decided to concentrate on other types of
rats and the name has become confusing to many. After a six-month break from the
rat world, we celebrate our return with a new name, but the same registered
rattery initials: BVR will always mean a rat that comes from a loving
environment, from a breeder who is breeding for the whole pet
rat!
Bao Varakhii reflects our changed interest in rats: dark
Seal Point Siamese and Russian Cinnamons. The
word Bao is Chinese, meaning "precious," and Varakhii is a Russian name meaning
"blessing." We feel that our rats are indeed "precious blessings!" We
concentrate on the whole rat: a beautifully friendly, healthy and cuddly rat
with brilliant eyes, soft fur and great conformation. We breed to high standards,
hoping to improve our animals to show quality while at the same time never compromising on the magificent temperament BVR rats are famous for.
We have built a solid breeding foundation of beautiful, healthy animals obtained from reputable and hard-working breeders, and still seek healthy outcross every few generations. Since all of our foundation rats carry at least three generations of pedigree, we know with a high degree of certainty what we will get before we breed, eliminating the need for culling or "experimental" litters. We hold ourselves to a high standard, and we try not to patronize or support breeders or clubs which do not meet that standard.
